A musical project that began creating its first compositions in year 2007. Hailing from Santo Domingo, The Dominican Republic, Caffe Latte has been working hard over the past year to let their entire home country and now world about their unique sound. The band has become busy of late touring all over the Dominican Republic in support of their album currently available on iTunes and many more! Why did we create an iPhone / iPod Touch app?
We are always striving to be innovative with our service. We created this app simply because no other distributor, direct label, and/or retailer that serves our particular type of independent music is doing so. Aside of distributing to retailers, licensing portals, promo pools, and more, we now have the ability to easily put music in the many iPhones and iPods around the world with this APP! The service is additionally a win/win because it promotes each and every label while keeping their music’s privacy and integrity in tact by promoting their music to be sold on JamVana.com. Each and every artist should get paid for their work, and we will promote this service to increase sales for all of our label partners.
What else is coming?
We will continue to run and service the SymSTREAM app! The SymSTREAM app will be able to provide a tracklist, search option, and much more! Best of all, new music will be added every week thus making your SymSTREAM library jam packed with new music every single week! With the SymSTREAM application launched, expect to see many more apps in 2010 and onwards from SymphonicAPPZ (a brand of Symphonic Distribution).
Symphonic Distribution President & CEO interviewed on Brazilian Blog!
Earlier this week, Ilan Kriger, a talented DJ, Producer, Record Label owner (Eletrodomesticos Records), and owner of a popular blog in Brazil stopped by to interview Symphonic Distribution’s President & CEO Jorge Brea. The interview touches on some opinions from Jorge Brea as well as other educational topics. To read the interview in Portuguese, click here! Otherwise, read below and enjoy! Symphonic Distribution thanks Ilan Kriger for this interview posted on his site and translated in English for SymBlog.com!

1) Who is Jorge Brea?
I am a business owner, DJ, and Producer. I was born in the Dominican Republic and moved to the United States at the young age of 7 in 1992. I got into the DJ scene due to my brother’s influence and began producing and DJing soon after. From a production standpoint, I used to do music in the Breaks genre but went ahead and have switched over to all House. In my day I have had about 46 Vinyl Releases, 6 CD releases, and more on the digital front. In 2004, I launched Nulogic Records (now under new ownership) and in 2006 began Symphonic Distribution which distributes 600+ labels from around the world. I am the President and CEO of Symphonic Distribution and even though it is an interesting job title, I am connected to all aspects of the business from sales, marketing, content distribution, and support. I am very pleased to be representing what I feel are the best labels in the industry today. Aside of the distribution aspect of the business, I am also a Producer/DJ/Label owner as well, thus, myself and my team are very aware with the challenges and work that labels do. I am happy and blessed to be doing what I love with my close friends, and our great labels. Also happy to be doing this interview!
2) What do you about the future of the music industry?
Well, the next 10 years will definitely be what changes the industry. I think we will see CDs fade to almost nothing and for DJs, new technology that makes them less dependant on Vinyls. For a new producer, I think it is the best time to be in music because our industry is very indie-driven. If you produce music, you don’t need to really have a big record label to be successful. I see Digital Sales rising to greater heights. It is estimated that by 2013, we should see Digital Music sales at about 80% of the music industry as a whole so to answer this question, I believe that Digital and Digital retailers are the future of the industry. Frankly, I wouldn’t want to go back to pressing a physical product and/or doing much in that field as the technology is quickly dying and the companies manufacturing and distributing are starting to die as well.
3) What advice you can give to new labels?
I can give a lot of advice to labels! First, work hard! Second, plan, plan, plan and plan. It is vital for a label to have releases ready for 6+ months. If you make one song, you are not a label and you really shouldn’t be running a label. Third, while I am a supporter of Beatport, we see too many labels thinking that it is the only way to make it in the industry. A lot of emphasis is placed on GETTING ON Beatport which we would love to do for all labels, unfortunately, its not a possibility. What we look for is a label with a good release plan, marketing plan, and business plan. We start by sending them our application and really finding out what they are about. If they are ready for Beatport, we submit, if not, we guide via our communications. We have a lot of documentation that is available in our educational site that discusses what labels can do to grow their brand. The site is www.symintranet.com. Labels and artists need to treat their music seriously. This isn’t a game and we see TOO many labels come and go just for a quick buck. If you want to make it in the industry, be consistent, organized, plan well, and treat it like a business. Aside of that, the most important thing, MAKE QUALITY MUSIC! If you lay a music beat down it doesn’t mean it’s a completed track. Last but not least, labels and artists need to be open minded. Nobody is a Tiesto right off the bat, you must be open to criticsm and look at what others are doing. Keep the egos down!
4) Is it possible today to get a label in Beatport directly?
Its possible. New labels are added monthly or so but just because you are a label, you will not be on. If your music is not up to par, they will not approve it. If you do not have a release schedule that’s consistent, we will not submit it. If you are patient, work hard, and still build your brand on other retailers FIRST, then you have better chances of a label that is brand new. Of course, if you have a major artist attached, I’d say your chances are better but be consistent, have a good plan, be patient, get your label a good buzz on other retailers, and then think about Beatport. When dealing with labels, we must remind them that we are DISTRIBUTION company. We distribute to retailers NOT just Beatport. With this said, don’t offend other retailers by putting your eggs in one basket because there are a lot of good hard working retailers and people out there that are accepting of labels. We believe a label should have the focus of getting on Beatport but when on Beatport, should look at stepping up their game as best as possible and still keep into consideration other retailers to better help their brand. I also do not believe that limiting a label to one store is the best bet, frankly, it’s stupid. If you are a label and you want to focus on one retailer such as iTunes or whatever, then really, you are limiting all of your possibilities.
5) How many labels works with your distribution company?
We have 600+ labels including several aggregators that we deal with. We value each and every partnership deeply and while there are challenges that each of them have and may pose to us, we try our best to work through them. We believe our communication is great and very transparent and I know I didn’t have this when I dealt with other physical or digital distributors.
6) Are you accepting any new labels? How they can apply?
Yes! We love new labels and in fact have special documentation for them to help them. In addition, if you are an artist and you want to start a label, we can help with this as well! We offer many services and have brands that are all helpful to newcomers as well as established partners. We think that other retailers are also really accepting of new labels. I have seen good support from JamVana.com, JunoDownload, TrackItDown, Digital-Tunes.net, and many more.
[DT052] Haze - Panic Movement EP (OUT NOW)
This 2nd release of the year we present the debut of this newcomer on our label. Haze (Blaq, MX) delivers an EP of 4 tracks, expertly showing his particular sound. The productions themselves cover an extensive range (yet always retaining our particular brand of house) of styles. “Doppelganger” is a deep, techy track very useful for warm up or beginning a dj mix. “Oh My Dog” makes you remember those beach parties in summer. “Politiks” has a minimal vibe, melacholical, vocals and riffs great for your after parties. “Rubik” this track goes more dark, deep and clicky without never leaving it’s housey mood. USE WISELY!
Tracklisting:
1. Haze - Doppelganger
2. Haze - Rubik
3. Haze - Oh My Dog
4. Haze - Politiks

I would HATE to be on the receiving end of this. But I’m not (zing!), so I’m enjoying this Crookers banger and the spiraling Rosen synth-wave remix. Permission to make this the anthem to a million 12-26 year-old ladies has been granted.

MATRIXSYNTH: iPad and Electronic Music

Please Note the video at end of this article does not feature any synths. It is a concept video for a tablet UI. The hardware looks like the majority of artist renders for the upcoming Apple iPad. If you haven’t heard, today, Apple will announced their new tablet device. It is essentially an iTouch with a 10″ screen, more power, memory and may have the ability to run multiple apps at the same time.
Why is this a new world in synthesis? In short this is a new hardware platform for synthesis. Yes it is an extension of the iTouch platform, but the obvious key difference and game changer in my opinion will be the size of the screen. For example, imagine controlling all of your synths running Numerology on the device in that video. Imagine interfacing with your modular with a UI optimized version of VOLTA or Expert Sleepers. Imagine running Way Out Ware’s iSample, or how about an ARP2600 emulation with sliders. Imagine running Audio Damage’s tattoo on one, etc. And don’t forget the accelorometer. Processing power, additional memory, and potentially running multiple apps at once will only add to the advantage the slate will have over the iTouch.
When I talk to people about the impact I think it will have, most people seem to be luke warm. They don’t get it. A little to my surprise, the many times critical Chris Randall of Analog Industries gets it:
“We don’t get to witness many major sea changes in the computer business (which is, for all intents and purposes, the music business these days)… we’re going to see some exciting shit in the next year, as all the tech companies take advantage of this new form factor. I predict that Jazz Mutant needs to port their shit promptly or they’re gonna go out of business. I also predict that we’ll see the mid-size music software companies taking the most advantage of this new form factor. But what I hope to see are some really intriguing new ways to make music on what is, for all intents and purposes, a new instrument that nobody knows how to play yet.”
The one caveat? MIDI Integration with other hardware. With the iPhone/iTouch there is no way to hook MIDI directly to the device. Because of this you can’t sync beats and sequences with your other gear. For example, this weekend I had Funk Box running on my iPhone while playing my synths along to it. It would have been great if I could have slaved my other devices to it. Note you can use TouchOSC to remotely control a Mac running all your MIDI integration. James Husted of Synthwerks brought up the obvious advantage of this though, you can also go completely wireless. Have your Mac do the work and use the slate to control it all. But then you don’t get all the cool synths designed specifically for the device unless they can sync via OSC.
Regardless, I can’t wait. I think it might be slow to take off in our world, but when it does this is going to be huge. I can’t wait to use it in the studio. I can’t wait to use it while kicking back on the couch. This is the PPG Realizer on steroids. A true open platform hardware synth with a multi-touch interface. I can’t wait to see what software on the synth front comes out for it and I can’t wait to post it all. This means you can expect to see more posts on synth centric software for the device over time.
Note this post primarily focuses on the upcoming Apple slate because I believe it will be the game changer. There are other tablets coming based on Windows, Android and proprietary Linux based OSes, but Apple has a way of making the hardware and software feel completely integrated. On the iPhone/iTouch when you load the software it feels like hardware. This is a new world in sythesis and music creation.
Update: I wanted to point out the following from Chris Randall: “But what I hope to see are some really intriguing new ways to make music on what is, for all intents and purposes, a new instrument that nobody knows how to play yet.”
Think about that for a bit. Software can be limiting compared to hardware when it comes to how you interface with the instrument (think mouse and monitor). Now think about the slate device as hardware. It will not be limited by traditional physical hardware. Think about that statement. Static predefined hardware may now be limiting compared to the slate because the slate is customizable hardware. The Jazz Mutant Lemur was first, but out of many people’s price range. If they come out with their software suite for the new slate, I will buy it.
Update2: I just watched the video above again and something else came to mind. Something potentially big. What this device might do that no hardware or software synth prior to maybe the iPhone/iTouch has, is bring synthesis to the masses. Most will buy the device for other reasons. Most would probably never buy a synthesizer, software or hardware. But… I’m guessing a few people not into synthesis have bought some of the iPhone synth apps for gaming/entertainment purposes. Brian Eno’s Bloom, and Zach Gage’s synthPond immediately come to mind. I can see similar apps that are affordable and simple to use on the surface but deep in synthesis if you choose it to be. I can see this device opening the world of synthesis to people who might otherwise never even discover it.
Artist Of The Week (1/27/10): Wardian

About Artist / Why we like:
Wardian is quickly making himself a force to be reckoned with in the Breaks scene. With releases on Symphonic Distribution distributed labels Flextone Records, ChipSound Records, Subtribe Records, and other labels such as Selecta Breaks, this artist pushes the limits of what Breaks can sound like. We are particularly excited as he has recently inked a deal with Symphonic for the launch of his own label “Funn Dark Records”. With this artist releasing and producing hard, we see great things for him and his label in the future.
